Download all your Google Photos with Google Takeout
Selecting photos in the Google Photos app downloads at most a few hundred at a time. For the whole library, use Google Takeout – it packs everything into zip files.

Steps
- Go to takeout.google.com and sign in.
- Click Deselect all, then tick only Google Photos. (Optional: “All photo albums included” lets you pick specific albums/years.)
- Next step: delivery by download link, Export once, file type .zip, size per file – choose 50 GB for fewer parts if your disk and connection can handle it, or 2–10 GB for easier downloads.
- Create export. Google emails you when it's ready (hours to days for large libraries).
- Download every part before the links expire (the email and Takeout page show the date).
What you get
- Folders per album and per year (“Photos from 2019”) – the same photo can appear in both.
- For most photos a
.jsonfile with the real date, GPS and description. Many files (screenshots, downloads, edited copies, some videos) don't carry these in their own metadata – that's why dates look wrong after import into another app. - Live/motion photos split into an image and a video file.
Next steps
Don't import the raw folders into another app yet. Run the export through Rollmend first: it matches each file with its JSON, writes the dates and places into the files, removes album duplicates and gives you a year/month folder ready for iCloud, Immich, a NAS or an external drive. You can select all zip parts at once without extracting them.
Scan your Takeout first – free. Rollmend reads your Google Photos Takeout folder or zip parts in the browser, matches every photo and video with its JSON (including .supplemental-metadata.json and cut-off names), writes the real date, GPS and caption back into the files, removes album duplicates and exports a year/month folder. Nothing is uploaded. The scan report is free for everything and 50 files can be fixed free; a $15 one-time license fixes the whole library.
Questions and answers
Does Takeout delete my photos from Google?
No. It only makes a copy.
Zip or .tgz?
Zip opens everywhere and Rollmend reads zip parts directly. Choose zip.
