An alternative to Takeout helper scripts
Open-source command-line tools like Google Photos Takeout Helper (GPTH) and exiftool are popular for cleaning up a Takeout. If you’d rather not install anything or type commands, Rollmend does the same main jobs in a browser tab.
Comparison
| Command-line tools | Rollmend | |
|---|---|---|
| Install | Download a program or Python/Perl, use a terminal | Nothing – opens in the browser, works offline |
| Input | Extracted folder | Extracted folder or the zip parts directly |
| Report before changes | Varies | Yes – counts, match methods, date sources, CSV |
| Price | Free, open source | Free scan; $15 once to fix all files |
| Flexibility | Very high (scripts, options) | The common needs, with simple options |
Both are fine choices. If a command-line tool works for you, there’s no need to switch.
What Rollmend covers
- Matching all known JSON naming variants (supplemental-metadata, cut-off names, “(1)”, “-edited”)
- Writing dates (EXIF/QuickTime), GPS and descriptions
- Removing duplicates between albums and “Photos from YYYY” folders
- Live photo / motion photo videos
- Output by year/month as a ZIP64 archive with correct file times
What it doesn’t do
- No .tgz input (extract first)
- No symlinked album folders (album membership goes to a CSV, or optional album copies)
- No editing of RAW files – they get an .xmp sidecar
Questions and answers
Is Rollmend open source?
No, but it uses open-source libraries (listed in the app’s LICENSES file) and it never sends your files anywhere.
